Windows 11 users who rely on 1Password have some exciting news. The popular password manager is taking a significant step towards a more secure and convenient login experience. 1Password has announced that its beta version for Windows now supports the native Passkey API on Windows 11. This move promises a more integrated way to manage and use passkeys directly within the operating system.

This development is the result of a close partnership between 1Password and Microsoft, spanning over a year. Both companies collaborated extensively on the design and development of the API, aiming to provide a top-tier passkey experience for Windows users. To facilitate this new feature, 1Password has introduced a new MSIX installer for its Windows application. This updated installer utilizes MSIX technology, which is better suited for integrating with Windows 11’s advanced functionalities, including system-level passkeys.

The primary advantage of this native integration is the ability to use passkeys beyond just web browsers. Users will be able to utilize their 1Password-managed passkeys for desktop applications as well. This broadens the scope of passkey utility significantly, moving towards a more passwordless future across different types of software. In fact, earlier this month we reported on how Microsoft has decided to make all new accounts passwordless.

For those eager to try it out, the feature is currently available to users in the Windows Insider Program, specifically on the Beta or Dev Channel, and requires 1Password 8 for Windows. After installing the 1Password MSIX beta build and ensuring you are on a compatible Windows Insider version, you might experience a delay of 24 to 48 hours for Windows to enable the API feature, followed by a system restart. Once set up, you’ll need to enable “Show passkey suggestions” in 1Password’s autofill settings and then select 1Password as the system authenticator in Windows System Settings.

While this enhanced passkey support is currently in the Windows 11 Insiders Beta channel, 1Password has indicated that a full release for all Windows 11 users is expected soon. The goal is a more seamless and secure authentication method across all devices and applications.
