Samsung’s One UI 8 beta seems to be causing some frustration for testers. Users are finding a once-simple function, quickly muting their phone, has become a frustrating multi-step process. The familiar ability to silence your device by simply pressing the volume down button repeatedly until it muted is now gone.

Instead, the volume down button now only lowers the ringtone volume until it reaches vibrate mode. To fully mute the phone, users now need to pull down the quick panel and tap a specific ringtone mute option. This change has sparked widespread annoyance, especially for those who rely on quick, discreet muting in situations like meetings or movie theaters.

One user, NikoNikoNiko, took to Samsung’s community forum to voice their frustration. They said, “Adding extra steps to mute our phones is completely unnecessary. There are situations like meetings, movies, or other moments where I need to silence my phone quickly and discreetly, and these added steps only make that harder.” Of course, they aren’t alone. Others also quickly chimed in with their complaints about the change.

Similarly, I spotted a few other threads discussing this “regression,” as some call it. One individual, userqpQY7dNOh3, urged Samsung to fix this and restore the original functionality. On that thread, a Samsung mod urged them to submit feedback using the Samsung Members app.

However, on the thread by NikoNikoNiko, Samsung’s One UI Beta Team acknowledged the feedback. They said, “Setting the ringtone to the lowest volume using the volume up/down key goes into vibration mode is the current implementation for sounds. You can mute your ringtone easily from your quick panel > Ringtone Mute option.”

As expected, this official response has done little to quell the frustration. Many argue that the new method, while an option, is far less intuitive and convenient than the previous quick-mute functionality. So we’ll just have to wait and see if Samsung decides to revert the change before the public release or not. That said, feel free to share your thoughts about this change in the comments below.
