Alexa seems to have decided to give everyone the silent treatment on Tuesday night, and people are not having it.
Thousands of users found themselves yelling at unresponsive Echo devices as Amazon’s voice assistant went down with no prior notice. The outage hit around 7:30 PM Eastern, according to some reports, turning smart homes into dumb ones.

“I ask her to do anything and all I get is the blue bar then nothing,” one frustrated user posted on Reddit. “She will still fart though. So keeping the kids entertained I guess.”
That pretty much sums up the night for most Alexa users. Devices would light up when called but then just… stare back. No music, no weather updates, no turning off the bedroom lights. Just awkward silence. Some people even mention that the Fire TV service is not working as well. This could suggest that there could be major server issues at Amazon.
Complaints poured in from everywhere – Texas, California, Virginia, Florida. Even the Alexa app stopped working, so there is no backup plan. Interestingly, one commenter noted that they called customer support and were told that it might take a couple of days to get it resolved.
Complete shutdown for me in Seattle, WA. Support assistant I contacted said the issue could be resolved in a couple days?? (Source)
Amazon, for its part, still hasn’t posted an official statement regarding the outage. The weirdest part? A few users figured out that canceling their Alexa+ subscription immediately fixed everything.
This makes the whole situation all the more confusing. So we’ll just have to wait for an official statement from Amazon to understand what’s going on. In the meantime, give this potential workaround a shot and let us know if it fixed the unresponsive Alexa assistant for you.
