Apple might have dazzled us with its new AI-powered Camera Control and those larger Pro displays, but they “forgot” to mention a major upgrade in the iPhone 16 series — the 45W wired fast charging. Yep, that’s right! According to certification from the China Quality Certification Centre, all iPhone 16 models can now sip juice at a speed that’s over 50% faster than their iPhone 15 cousins, which maxed out at 27-29W.
While Tim Cook was busy making sure we knew about the 25W MagSafe speeds, he conveniently left out the wired charging boost. It’s almost as if Apple doesn’t want to shout too loudly about it — probably because they’re still not bundling a charger in the box. But no worries, with a compatible charger, you’ll get that 45W magic through the USB-C port.
With this, Apple has finally caught up to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S series, which has been enjoying 45W fast charging since the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra hit the shelves. Samsung fans have been cruising along with these charging speeds for years, and just to rub it in, some of Samsung’s midrangers also boast 45W fast charging. But let’s not get too smug just yet, because even at 45W, Apple and Samsung are still miles behind when it comes to the crazy-fast charging speeds you see on Chinese smartphones from brands like OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi. Over there, 65W, 80W, or even 100W fast charging is the norm.
And if you’re sitting there with your Google Pixel 9, let’s have a moment of silence. Google’s “flagship” Pixel 9 phones have officially been lapped in the fast-charging race, with their 27W wired speeds now looking like a tricycle trying to keep up with a Tesla. Even the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s 37W speed isn’t close. Maybe it’s time for a “speed” meeting, Google?
But wait, there’s more Apple didn’t tell you. It turns out the iPhone 16 series also comes with an easier-to-replace battery. Yep, you read that right. Apple re-engineered the internal design to comply with a new EU law that demands smartphones have user-replaceable batteries by 2025. While Apple’s PR machine stayed silent on stage, a press release reveals that these changes improve heat dissipation and make battery service easier. A win-win for users, especially in the EU, where the rules demand simpler battery replacements.
At the end of the day, Apple clearly wants us to discover these hidden gems on our own. You’d think they’d want to shout about their improvements from the rooftops, but for now, we’ll just give a slow clap and wait for the teardown videos to confirm even more secrets.
