A growing number of Apple Music subscribers are reporting a frustrating bug that’s causing albums in their libraries to split into multiple entries, making navigation and organization difficult.
The issue, which appears to have emerged in recent weeks, randomly separates songs from the same album into different entries in users’ libraries. Many affected users have taken to Reddit to share their experiences and seek solutions.
“Recently my Apple Music library has been splitting songs from their albums,” wrote Reddit user IchBinJoao. “Makes it so annoying to navigate the library.” The bug affects users across multiple platforms, including iOS devices and the web version of Apple Music. Screenshots shared online show albums being fragmented into several entries, with some songs appearing under “Unknown Artist” despite being from properly tagged albums.
It seems to be a recurring problem for some, with one user, meestir, commenting, “This has been going on for years but is increasingly becoming more common.” But it seems that this time around it’s more widespread and likely tied with a recent update considering the number of complaints within the same timeframe.
Frustrated users have been trying various workarounds. Some have found temporary success by manually editing the metadata for each track using the Apple Music desktop app. This involves ensuring the ‘album artist’ and ‘album’ fields are identical for all songs within an album or sometimes marking and then unmarking an album as a ‘compilation.’
Other attempted fixes include deleting the affected albums from the library and re-adding them, or even clearing the app’s cache and reinstalling it. However, these solutions are often time-consuming and not consistently effective, with the bug sometimes reappearing.
Many subscribers are now hoping for a fix in an upcoming software update, as the manual workarounds are time-consuming, especially for those with extensive music libraries.
