The latest iOS 18.1.1 update seems to be causing trouble for some iPhone users. Reports have flooded Apple’s official forum with users complaining that their apps refuse to open or crash shortly after launching. This isn’t limited to obscure apps either. Essential ones like banking apps, Apple Mail, and even the Camera app are reportedly affected too.
One frustrated user took to Apple’s forum noting that 80% of their apps stopped working after updating their iPhone 16 Pro Max. They tried reinstalling the apps but didn’t have any luck. “I can’t open my banking apps to verify transactions. It’s causing major issues,” they wrote.
Another user echoed the frustration, saying their apps would start to open but then immediately disappear. They also noted that reinstalling apps wasn’t helping. “Very upset with Apple. These updates should not break our phones,” they added. This particular thread has over 360 “me too” votes from users who claim to be experiencing the same issue. Adding to that, I’ve seen around a dozen more threads on the official forums.
Even on Reddit, I came across a few posts talking about similar issues. For instance, one Redditor posted that their Kindle app and some others just freeze after opening.
The issue isn’t universal, though. I’m on the beta channel for iOS 18 and using an iPhone 13. I was on the iOS 18.1.1 beta builds without hiccups and can’t replicate the issue on the iOS 18.2 beta either. Plus, judging by the number of reports, it doesn’t seem like everyone on iOS 18.1.1 is running into the problem. That makes it even harder to pinpoint what’s going wrong.
Beyond apps refusing to open, some users reported problems with specific functionalities. For instance, some claimed that Apple Music skips tracks, Siri fails to respond properly, and even basic functions like accessing photos or making calls are glitchy. There’s also a separate problem with RCS messaging that has left many frustrated.
While Apple hasn’t publicly commented on the situation yet, some users suggest a few workarounds. Restarting the phone, reinstalling apps, or even factory resetting the device has been tried by many, but with mixed success. For those hoping to roll back to an earlier version of iOS, it’s not as simple as doing so on Android. Apple generally stops signing older versions once a new update is out, making downgrades nearly impossible for most users.
For now, affected users might have to wait for a new update to fix the bug if the potential workarounds like restarting or reinstalling apps don’t work. If you’re not experiencing issues yet, it might be wise to hold off on updating to 18.1.1 until Apple addresses the problems.
