Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has only just landed, but many players are already slamming its maps as some of the worst in the series’ history. Despite praise for the game’s fast-paced mechanics, frustrated fans are taking to forums and social media to vent about the chaotic layouts, poor spawn points, and overly small designs.
A particular point of criticism revolves around broken spawns. Several players have complained about being stuck in the same spawn area repeatedly, only to be killed over and over without a chance to escape. One user on Reddit wrote, “If you get trapped [in certain corners], there is no escape for like 5 or 6 deaths in a row.” They described the experience as “hell.”
Another player said that if the map had been added to smaller game modes like ‘Faceoff’, it would’ve made more sense. Instead, they criticized the developers, saying, “They smoked crack and put it in the core rotation.” Moreover, it’s not just one or two posts criticizing the maps on Black Ops 6. We’ve found close to two dozen posts on Reddit, as well as a flood of complaints on X.
Some of the maps are so compact that players feel the design encourages pure chaos. “I took four steps, and seven contact grenades flew over the stairs,” one user said, summing up their frustration. Fans have compared some of the maps to Shipment, a famously tight map from previous COD titles, but with less charm. Another said, “Between the flow and spawns it’s actually impossible to get anything going on some of these maps yet others the spawn traps are straight ridiculous.”
In hardcore modes, the situation reportedly gets worse. “Try playing it in hardcore,” wrote one disgruntled user, adding a string of disgusted emojis.
Some players feel that even beyond the spawn issues, the maps lack personality. “The gameplay is nearly perfect, but the maps feel soulless, bland, and stale,” said one Redditor. Many fans expressed that they only enjoy two or three maps out of the entire rotation, with the rest feeling like filler.
Others called for the return of classic maps from older Black Ops games like Nuketown, Hijacked, and Firing Range. “Literally just give me a throwback playlist, and I’ll only play that,” a player wrote. However, another player warned that even old favorites wouldn’t fix the core issues. “None of these maps will play the same with the new movement, it’s going to be just as bad as the current maps,” they argued.
So despite solid gameplay mechanics, Black Ops 6 is off to a rocky start, thanks to its divisive map designs. Players are hoping future updates will bring better maps, or at least some nostalgic ones from older titles. For now, it seems many players are grinding through frustration, hoping things improve. As one fan humorously put it, “Only psychopaths enjoy Lowtown.”
Now it remains to be seen if Treyarch will acknowledge the criticism or just hope for the early complaints to fade away. Let us know your thoughts on the maps in Black Ops 6 in the comments section below.
