If you’ve been enjoying the convenience of making and receiving calls hands-free through Alexa devices, we’ve got some bittersweet news: the EE Calls with Alexa service is ringing its last bell. Starting January 15, 2025, this feature will officially be retired. This means you’ll no longer be able to use your Alexa devices to make and receive calls using your EE number.

For those unfamiliar, it allowed users to channel their inner tech wizard by making and receiving calls through Alexa devices without even picking up their phones. All it took was a quick text — “ALEXA” to 150 — to set up, and you were off to the races. Calls counted against your monthly allowance, and out-of-plan charges applied as usual, but the freedom of hands-free calling? Priceless.

Unfortunately, that convenience is coming to an end. EE has revealed that the service will no longer be available after January 15. In a notice posted on its support page, EE expressed regret for the disruption, saying, “We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

While EE hasn’t given a detailed explanation for the closure, it’s important to clarify that this decision is specific to EE. Alexa itself isn’t going anywhere, and Amazon has also been notifying users about this upcoming change to avoid confusion. So, before you blame Alexa — or Amazon — let’s set the record straight: this is on EE.

It’s not uncommon for services like these to be phased out due to changing priorities or low adoption rates. Still, for the loyal users who’ve integrated Alexa into their daily routines, the loss will surely sting.

The EE Calls with Alexa service might be on its way out, but it’s had a good run, adding a touch of futuristic flair to our daily communication. As we bid farewell, let’s raise a toast to the convenience it brought and hope that EE has something equally innovative up its sleeve for the future.

In the meantime, make the most of the service while it lasts.
