We're aware that the new Text Chat is bound to the ENTER key, preventing some other keybinds from being bound overtop it.

Fortnite’s latest update introduced a new text chat feature, but many players aren’t pleased with how it functions—or doesn’t. The chat feature is locked to the Enter key and there’s no way to rebind it. This small change has caused big headaches, especially for players with custom keybind setups.
Epic Games has acknowledged the issue. The official Fortnite Status account posted the following:
In Fortnite, custom keybinds allow players to map their controls for a better gaming experience. However, the hardcoded Enter key creates conflicts. If Enter is already bound to another action — like crouching or interacting with objects — it now opens the text chat as well. For left-handed players or those using non-standard layouts, this creates significant frustration during gameplay.
One Reddit user shared their struggle: “It’s critical for us left-handed players lol, we always get shafted in games by non-rebindable keys.” Another player pointed out that Enter even causes their game to toggle between fullscreen and windowed mode.
The Fortnite community has been very vocal about this issue, with a Reddit thread on r/FortNiteBR gathering hundreds of upvotes and comments. Some players have proposed workarounds, like using scripts to reassign the Enter key, but many are frustrated that these measures are necessary.
A player on X highlighted the impact on custom setups: “I’m left-handed, so I use left-handed keybinds. My crouch button is Enter, and now the new text chat feature is also Enter. So, I can’t crouch. Is there a setting I can change?”
While Epic has confirmed a fix is coming, they haven’t provided a timeline for its release. For now, players are stuck working around the issue or reverting to default keybinds temporarily. We’ll update the article if and when there are any further developments.
