Users who’re still loyal to the trusty ol’ Google Assistant instead of Gemini are now having to deal with a broken assistant. Multiple folks have taken to Reddit to report that they’re unable to use the ‘Search screen’ and ‘Translate’ features in Google Assistant.
According to complaints, when users launch Google Assistant and tap on the ‘Search screen’ or ‘Translate’ button, nothing happens. Instead of performing the action as usual, GA simply gets dismissed. Some unlucky users claim they didn’t even see the buttons at first, however, after the most recent Google app update, the buttons do appear, but don’t work.
This issue does appear to be a widespread problem because, apart from the numerous reports on Reddit, I was also able to replicate it on a Pixel 8 and Pixel 7a. For clarification, the Pixel 8 is running the latest Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 update, while the Pixel 7a has the latest stable build with the September patch. Therefore, it’s unlikely that a system update is responsible for the bug. Here’s a video recording of the issue for reference:
If you too are facing the same problem with Google Assistant on your device, then there might be a potential fix. This involves uninstalling the updates from the Google app and re-installing a slightly older version of the Google app using an APK. Here’s how one Redditor described the process:
1-Setting>app manager>google>uninstall update. 2- Go to apkcombo download an older version google app: 15.34.35.28.arm64. install it. Done.
So if you aren’t willing to wait around for Google to resolve the bug, then you might want to give this potential solution a shot. What makes this even more frustrating is that Gemini Assistant doesn’t support translating the screen yet. So, switching to Gemini doesn’t really solve the problem.
As usual, we’ll keep tabs on the situation and will post an update if and when there are any further developments. So stay tuned to TechIssuesToday for further updates on the bug.
