Google Maps users have been troubled by a bug that’s causing the app to crash on their Android devices. The issue was first noticed by the folks over at 9to5Google who reported that users with Google Maps version 11.144.x and 11.145.x were impacted by this random bug.
Based on the timeline of reports, it seems the issue started several hours ago and still persists at the time of this writing. Users have taken to Reddit and Google’s Issue Tracker to seek help. The issue seems to be affecting many Google Pixel users, however, it’s not exclusively a Pixel bug. That said, when tested on our Pixel 8 unit, Google Maps only crashed upon the first launch. After the “Maps keeps stopping” pop-up appeared, I tapped “Close app” and tried relaunching Google Maps. It worked!
However, other users don’t seem to be as lucky. Several users for whom Google Maps keeps crashing claim that basic troubleshooting tips like restarting the device or clearing the cache don’t help either. One affected user on Reddit said “P7P in the UK. Google Maps opens, then immediately shuts down. Not aware of doing any updates to Maps. Have cleaned the cache & store – rebooted – makes no difference. Guessing it’s either a server side issue or a buggy app.”
But there might be a potential solution. If you’re on the beta version of Google Maps. You can try switching to the stable build instead. You’ll have to opt-out of the Google Maps beta testing, disable the app, then reinstall the Google Maps stable version. This should fix the problem, according to some users.
If that doesn’t help, then you might just have to wait for Google to release a quick-fix to resolve the bug that’s causing Maps to crash on Android devices. A Googler on the Issue Tracker claimed that they’ve passed on reports about the issue to the development team and will share updates when available. So we wait…
