Some Google Pixel users have noticed an irritating problem with their phones after installing the March 2025 update. While watching videos, the screen brightness keeps flickering or dimming on its own. It’s not just a small annoyance — it can really ruin the experience. This issue has popped up on models like the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 8, and Pixel 9. It doesn’t seem to matter if you’re streaming on apps like Netflix or playing local videos; the problem shows up either way.
But it seems like there might just be a potential workaround for the problem. The trick involves tweaking a setting called “Smooth Display” in your phone’s menu. If you’re wondering what that is, Smooth Display boosts your screen’s refresh rate to 120Hz. That’s great for smooth scrolling and animations, but it might be clashing with the brightness controls after this latest update.
Here’s how you can try it out. Open your phone’s Settings, then tap on Display. Scroll down until you see Smooth Display, and switch it off. This drops the refresh rate back to a standard 60Hz. “Turn off ‘Smooth Display’ from Android settings. Worked for me,” one user shared on Reddit. It’s not a surefire fix for everyone, but it’s worth a shot while we wait for Google to sort things out officially.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to replicate the bug on my Pixel 7a running the March update, so I cannot vouch for the workaround based on personal experience. However, since I don’t see any other potential fixes floating about, I’d suggest giving this a shot. You could even alternate between turning it off and on so that you don’t sacrifice the smooth scrolling experience when you’re not watching content.
You could also toggle the battery saver feature on/off when watching content since, as another user pointed out, that basically disables the Smooth Display setting. Whatever the case, let’s just hope Google rolls out a quick fix so that users don’t have to rely on sacrificing the refresh rate just to watch videos peacefully.
We’ll post an update if and when there are any further developments. So stay tuned to TechIssuesToday!
