Many Instagram users have taken to Reddit and X to report that they can no longer use the ‘Mention’ feature to tag friends after they upload a Story. Typically, the option to mention an account after uploading a Story shows up in the menu after tapping the three dots. However, users claim they don’t see the option anymore.
This issue has popped up recently, and it’s affecting people across different regions and devices, from the US to Japan and New Zealand. One Reddit user wrote, “I used to be able to mention other users after I have posted the story… but a few days ago onward, the option has been removed for me completely.” Another added, “My friend just asked me to tag them in a story I posted but it isn’t giving me the option to add any mentions at all.”
People have tried restarting their phones to fix it, but that hasn’t worked. Some noticed the feature still works on their Android devices but vanished on their iPhones after a recent update, hinting that an app change might be behind this.
Interestingly, a few users have spotted a new ‘Mention’ button at the bottom of their Stories. One person explained, “They made it straight as a button, bottom of the story, you have the @ (mention) option.” I can confirm seeing this button on both the latest Android and iOS apps. But not everyone has it, which adds to the confusion. For those without the button, the old way of mentioning after posting is gone, leaving them stuck.

Instagram hasn’t said anything official yet, so it’s unclear if this is a glitch or a permanent shift. Some think the app might be pushing users to tag people while creating Stories instead of after posting. But that doesn’t seem to be the case since some can already see the dedicated ‘Mention’ button.
Many are deleting and reposting Stories with mentions added upfront, which takes extra time and messes with engagement stats. For now, the best advice is to keep the app updated to see if the ‘Mention’ button appears at the bottom.
