The drama surrounding Columbia University student Roy Lee just keeps getting messier. Lee, who used an AI tool called Interview Coder to cheat his way through a technical interview at Amazon, is back in the spotlight. He aced interviews at big tech firms like Amazon, Meta, and TikTok with his creation, even landing an offer from Amazon. But he turned it down, and soon after, someone tipped off Columbia University about his tactics. That sparked a disciplinary hearing from the school.
Things took a turn on March 10, 2025, when the university’s Center for Student Success and Intervention sent Lee a notice. They’d heard he planned to record or live-stream his upcoming in-person hearing set for March 11.
The notice pointed out their strict policy against unauthorized recordings, stating, “The Student Conduct office does not consent to being recorded and as a result of your potential to violate this policy and demonstrated past behaviors, the decision has been made to cancel your Dean’s Discipline hearing.” Instead, they’re switching to an Administrative Resolution on March 14, where Lee won’t be present. He’s been told he can submit a written statement to share his side.
Lee didn’t take it quietly. He hopped on X, posting, “alright guys, who snitched?” and later, “literally told them i would NOT be recording it; what more can I do ://///” His followers chimed in fast. One user, said, “Tech companies should be tripping over themselves to hire this guy. He actually did something interesting and useful.”
Others weren’t so kind. Another replied, “your reputation in the professional world is kinda fu**ed man,” to which Lee shot back, “f**k bro r u telling me ill NEVER be able to work at amazon?? wtf??” The comments ranged from support to straight-up roasting him for his choices.
This whole mess has people talking about AI, cheating, and what’s fair in job hunts. Columbia’s moving forward with their process, and Lee, who’s no longer at the school, is still dealing with the fallout. His disciplinary hold stays in place, and everyone’s waiting to see what happens next. This story’s nowhere near done.
