Update 08/07/24: Hulu support has said on X that the team is investigating this issue, but they are still urging those affected to submit feedback to assist in fixing it.

Hulu-and-PS5-app

Original article follows:

Hulu users on PlayStation 5 are in an uproar following a recent app update that has left many with a frustratingly broken viewing experience. Complaints are flooding social media and online forums, with PS5 users reporting everything from constant crashing and freezing to the inability to log in without creating a new Disney account.

Many say that the update has completely broken the app, resulting in non-stop crashes and an unwanted change to the fast-forward increment, among other functions and UI elements. Others have expressed frustration over being forced to create a MyDisney account despite being long-time Hulu subscribers. Technical issues have also been reported, among them the app locking up, becoming unresponsive, and displaying error messages. Some users have even found that the update logged them out of Hulu on other devices as well.

Although primarily affecting PS5 users, the freezing and crashing issues may not be confined to the gaming console. Some users of other devices, such as Amazon Firestick, have also been unable to log in to the Hulu app, but the problem is not as widespread as on the PlayStation.

The update has introduced other annoying issues as well. Some users report that the app now fast-forwards by 20-second increments instead of the previous 10 seconds, making navigation cumbersome. The new update has also removed some convenient features, such as the like/dislike options and the manage series option, which allowed users to reset show progress.

Despite the outcry, Hulu support has provided limited information so far. Responding to a complaint on X (formerly Twitter), Hulu support seemingly acknowledged the issue, noting that “our team made some adjustments to remedy this.” However, they did not specify what remedies were made or how users could access these fixes.

For now, a workaround for the freezing and crashing issues involves deleting the Hulu app from the PS5, reinstalling it, and then opting not to update when prompted. This temporary solution allows users to revert to the older version of the app, which appears to function correctly.

With the update’s impact seemingly concentrated on PlayStation 5 users, it is unclear whether this was a targeted change or an unintended consequence. Regardless, users are demanding answers and a swift fix from Hulu.

I haven’t been able to get into the Hulu app on the PS5 for the past two days no matter what I’ve tried. Every time I try to pull up my profile I get the “We’re having trouble loading this right now” message and I can get no further. Tried making an alternate profile, same result. Deleted and reinstalled the app, reset my internet connection, restarted the PS5, nothing helps. I’m basically paying these people for an app I can’t even use at this point.

I am not even able to watch a show. It says video could not be played every time I try and just prompts me to watch a different video or try again later

I’m having all of those problems too, Jessi. It’s really annoying that we had to update to an inferior version. Several steps down from what it was. Seems a lot clunkier when navigating shows too.

The new update also won’t let me use my left or right sticks to move through the app, only the directional keys. The subtitles also changed as well which is extremely bothersome for me. Instead of having just the words on the screen they put a black highlight behind it that is not removable or dimmable. Give me back the old app! 😩
