M4 Mac users are voicing frustrations over a resolution bug affecting ultrawide monitors, with numerous reports highlighting compatibility issues with 5K2K displays. According to a 9to5Mac report, users are unable to achieve proper HiDPI scaling, resulting in blurry text and interfaces. This issue is a significant step back for these high-end monitors, which previously worked seamlessly with Intel and earlier Apple Silicon Macs.

The problem appears to stem from how M4 Macs handle ultrawide monitors’ resolution settings, particularly those with a 5120 x 2160 configuration. HiDPI, which enhances display sharpness by upscaling the interface, no longer functions correctly. Instead, users report missing resolution options and degraded visual quality. Affected devices include not only the Mac mini but also the M4 MacBook Pros, as confirmed by users on Apple forums and Reddit.

Some have managed to enable HiDPI through third-party tools like BetterDisplay, but these workarounds come with trade-offs, such as a reduced refresh rate. While BetterDisplay forces HiDPI, users have noted a drop from 75Hz to 60Hz, further frustrating those who rely on smooth performance. “Same problem here,” one user shared. “MacBook Pro M1 Max: no problem. MacBook Pro M4 Max: 3840 x 1620 resolution is missing.”

This resolution bug isn’t the first issue M4 Mac users have encountered. Earlier this month, a widespread external display mirroring glitch plagued macOS 15.2 users, leading to false mirroring detections. We covered that issue in detail, including temporary fixes involving BetterDisplay, which also seems to be the go-to solution for this latest bug. You can read more about the mirroring glitch here.

If you’re considering an M4 Mac and use an ultrawide monitor, it might be wise to hold off until Apple resolves the issue. Meanwhile, tools like BetterDisplay can offer temporary relief, albeit with compromises. Let’s hope Apple rolls out a fix soon. We’ll post an update if there are any further developments.
