Samsung Galaxy S23 users are seeing their Edge Lighting dreams dimmed by a bug that rolled in with the latest One UI 6.1.1 update. Edge Lighting, the colorful glow that lights up the edges of your phone when you get notifications, has suddenly stopped working for many users, sparking a wave of frustration across forums.

Reports have been popping up on Reddit, Samsung community forum, and even X, from Galaxy S23 to S24 owners — and even Fold5 users aren’t immune. The common theme? Notifications are coming in, but the once-vibrant edges of their screens remain stubbornly dark. Some have even tried tweaking settings and wiping cache, but to no avail.

A popular workaround involves turning off Edge Lighting+ — the Good Lock feature that allows for extra Edge Lighting customization — but that comes at the cost of losing certain handy functions like “prevent swipe down,” which stops accidental app openings when swiping notifications.

A few hopeful souls managed to get basic Edge Lighting to work by turning off the Good Lock module altogether. Still, it’s clear this is more than just a minor glitch, and users want a permanent fix.

Samsung, aware of the problem, has spoken up. In a recent community update, the Good Lock support team acknowledged the bug and assured users that a software update is in the works. But here’s the catch: there’s no set timeline for when this fix will arrive. Samsung’s engineers are on it, but the timing of the patch depends on several factors, meaning users will have to sit tight for now.

In the meantime, users can disable Edge Lighting+ in GoodLock to restore basic functionality, but for those who enjoy the full suite of features, it’s more of a band-aid than a solution.

So, hang in there. A fix is on the horizon, but it might be a little longer before your phone’s edges light up like they used to.

Meanwhile, Samsung may have encountered some difficulties with the One UI 7 update this time around. For reference, the first One UI 6 beta arrived in August 2023, so it’s strange that we’re almost into October yet One UI 7 beta isn’t out yet. There were reports of an indefinite delay supposedly due to efforts to finetune One UI 6.1.1, and this doesn’t seem to have changed. But these delays are perhaps due to how massive the update, which will be based on Android 15, is expected to be.
