Google Home Hub users are running into a rather strange hiccup when trying to listen to the BBC World Service. Instead of tuning in to their familiar source of international news, many users across the globe are suddenly being redirected to stations like KQED in San Francisco or WXXI in Rochester. The glitch has sparked confusion and frustration, with some users joking that their Home Hub has developed a soft spot for US public radio.

For those relying on BBC World Service for their daily news, this is no small inconvenience. Users from the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the US have reported the issue, with some even sharing that their Hub has started playing other random stations, including, amusingly, something called “OFF Radio” when they ask it to stop.

The heart of the issue seems to be Google Assistant’s misinterpretation of the “BBC World Service” command. Instead of connecting to BBC Sounds, where it should play the requested station, it defaults to alternative stations like KQED, which only features BBC World Service as a small segment.

A few crafty users have found a temporary workaround by being more specific with their voice commands. Adding phrases like “UK BBC World Service South Asia” or manually casting from the BBC Sounds app has helped some regain control over their Hub’s listening habits. However, this is far from an ideal fix, and many are hoping Google will step in soon to sort out the confusion.

BBC has reportedly been prompt in responding to individual complaints, but so far, it appears the issue is rooted on Google’s end. While most BBC stations are working fine, the World Service seems to have fallen into some peculiar algorithmic limbo, where American stations get first dibs.

If you’re one of the many users missing out on your favorite BBC programs, hang tight — there’s hope that a fix will be rolled out soon. In the meantime, keep those specific voice commands handy, and maybe get ready for some unintentional deep dives into US public radio.
