I stumbled upon an interesting post on the Spotify subreddit that allegedly shows off an upcoming feature that’ll improve your listening experience. Redditor u/OhItsTom manually enabled a new ‘Enhance your headphones’ feature which will apparently apply sound filters to enhance the audio to make it sound better for your headphones specifically. Since headphones have their own “sound signatures” tuned by the OEMs, it’s likely that Spotify’s upcoming option will adjust things like the treble, bass, and mid-tones depending on the model of the headphones to make them perform better.

Here are two screenshots of the new feature:

As highlighted in the screenshots, Spotify will likely only fully support some popular headphones. Users will be able to search for their headphone’s make and model and then let Spotify work its magic. The tipster did mention that this new option is present in the same general menu as Spotify’s much-awaited Hi-Fi streaming quality option. Speaking of which, the same Redditor shared several screenshots showing off Spotify Hi-Fi’s UI.

The leaked UI elements show a new section for lossless audio with a bitrate of up to 1411kbps, which is a significant improvement over Spotify’s current maximum of 320kbps. There are also hints that the tier might support even higher bitrates and 24-bit/44.1kHz audio quality for some songs. The screenshots also show a compatibility checker to help users determine if their device can handle lossless audio playback.

There are still some uncertainties. The leaked features are visuals only and not functional yet. Spotify might also be rebranding “HiFi” to “Lossless”. With all the delays, some users are skeptical, but these leaks suggest that Spotify is making progress on bringing high-fidelity audio streaming to the platform.

Coming back to the ‘Enhance your headphones’ feature, u/OhItsTom says that the API is currently not active, thus preventing them from actually using the feature to see if it works. However, granted that the UI elements seem mostly ready, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Spotify’s official announcement soon. It’s likely that we’ll see it go live at the same time as Spotify Hi-Fi. So are you excited for Spotify’s upcoming audio quality enhancements? Let me know in the comments below.
