Apple appears set to delay a full-scale reinvention of its digital assistant until iOS 20 lands in 2027, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports. The tech giant is working to modernize Siri for the age of generative AI, but a “true modernized, conversational version of Siri” isn’t expected to debut until next-generation software rolls out.

According to Gurman, while significant updates are on the horizon, the most advanced overhaul of Siri will take time. A new iteration of Siri is reportedly scheduled to debut in May, incorporating the latest Apple Intelligence features unveiled nearly a year ago. This update is designed to handle everyday tasks — from setting timers to making calls — while also laying the groundwork for more sophisticated functions.

Gurman describes the forthcoming update as featuring “two brains”: one dedicated to traditional commands, and another engineered for handling complex queries that leverage user data. The integration of these dual capabilities, internally dubbed “LLM Siri,” is set to be revealed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with a spring 2026 launch.

Only after these incremental improvements will Apple push forward with fully modernizing Siri’s capabilities. The report indicates that the comprehensive upgrade, harnessing the power of generative AI for a conversational experience, is slated for release in 2027 with iOS 20.

This staged approach highlights the challenges Apple faces in overhauling a longstanding digital assistant in an era where advanced AI technologies are rapidly evolving. As Google and Amazon integrate cutting-edge AI into GeminiAssistant and Alexa, industry watchers will be keenly observing how Apple navigates this transformation to meet user expectations.

For now, consumers can look forward to meaningful improvements in Siri’s functionality over the coming year, with the promise of a more dynamic and intuitive digital assistant on the distant horizon.
