Twitch appears to have started showing pop-ups to users running ad blockers, encouraging them to either turn them off or sign up for Twitch Turbo. The move, reported by viewers on January 13, has sparked some frustration online.
The messages appear during streams, reminding viewers that using ad blockers hurts creators. One pop-up says, “Support the streamer by turning off ad block.” Another takes a different approach, suggesting users try Twitch Turbo — a paid subscription that removes ads and supports streamers.
Here’s how these pop-ups look:

Social media lit up with reactions, and plenty of them weren’t pretty. “This makes me want to leave the platform instantly, what a stupid idea,” one person said. “You got a free ad blocker? Consider paying us to blow ads.” another said in frustration. Others questioned the point of Twitch’s move, given that ad blockers haven’t reliably worked on the platform for a while. “Ad blocker doesn’t even work on Twitch though,” someone commented, confused by the push.
Some creators and fans defended Twitch’s push for Turbo, saying it’s a way to support streamers while avoiding ads. But plenty of viewers weren’t buying it, with some saying it’s like taking a page out of YouTube’s playbook.
The frustration goes beyond just the ads. Some viewers complained that the pop-up kept showing up multiple times during a single stream, making the whole experience frustrating. Others have already shared tips for blocking the prompts using browser tricks and custom scripts. Here’s what worked for some, according to a comment on Reddit:

Twitch Turbo costs $11.99 a month and offers ad-free viewing while still supporting streamers. But even with that pitch, many users seem hesitant. Whether Twitch will roll this out further or scrap the idea is still up in the air. But for now, viewers aren’t taking the hint quietly.

wow this sure will make me buy turbo for the great and not insane price of £11.99 and definitely won't make me just seek out some other adblocker to also block that pop up
