Users of the popular AI chatbot platform Character AI have been experiencing some interface whiplash recently. Just as many were getting accustomed to a newly rolled-out user interface, it appears the platform has reverted to its older design for numerous users. Naturally, this has got many users talking about the change once again.
Just a few days ago, Character AI introduced a refreshed UI design not long ago. However, this change wasn’t met with universal acclaim. Many users took to platforms like Reddit to voice their displeasure, complaining about the new look and feel, and reporting various bugs that seemed to accompany the update. Threads filled with criticism and memes highlighted the community’s resistance to the change.
Then, almost as suddenly as the new UI appeared, it vanished for many. Users started reporting that their Character AI interface had unexpectedly switched back to the previous version. This led to a fresh wave of posts, with users sharing their experiences and speculating on the reason behind the reversal.
The reaction to the old UI’s return has been mixed, mirroring the divided opinions on the new design itself. Some users expressed relief. One user, Osamu_Melisso, commented on Reddit, “Well, I hated the new one and I liked the old one a lot.” Another, Glum_Ad_8302, echoed this sentiment, stating, “in my opinion the old one is so much better because the new one is full with bugs.”
However, others who had either started liking the new design or had just gotten used to it expressed frustration at the sudden changeback. User CrimsonGamer12 lamented, “dammit I just got used to the new UI and you go and change it on me again?” User Bitch_idc added, “Ngl I liked the new one much more than the old one 😭”. So it’s clear that users are split in two camps here.
It remains unclear whether this reversion is a deliberate response to the user backlash, a temporary rollback due to technical issues, or part of ongoing testing. Character AI hasn’t made an official announcement clarifying the situation as of April 21, 2025. For now, users are left wondering which interface they’ll be greeted with next.
