The long-awaited Android 14 update for Chromecast with Google TV has finally rolled out. Many users were excited to see what it would bring to their streaming devices. But for some, it’s been less of an upgrade and more of a hassle. While it promises new features, the update has sparked a wave of complaints across forums like Reddit.
The problems started popping up almost immediately. One big issue is with external storage drives, as highlighted by the folks at 9to5Google. Some users say their drives just stopped working after the update. “My external storage drive has stopped working, great update as usual,” remarked one frustrated user. It’s not just storage, either. USB devices like Ethernet adapters are also failing for some. Another user chimed in, “Also, my ethernet adapter is not recognised anymore.” That’s a tough break for anyone relying on a wired connection.
Then there’s the color profile issue. Some noticed their screens looking different after the update. Icons and menus suddenly appeared more “matte” or flat. Turns out, the update switches the device to Dolby Vision by default. If that’s not your thing, you can fix it by going to Settings, then Display and Sound, and turning on Match content dynamic range. Still, it’s an extra step no one asked for.
Other headaches include Settings menu glitches, like crashing or odd scrolling. USB debugging is also causing trouble for developers. One user noted, “ADB won’t work over ethernet. Plugging it out, then enabling wifi allows ‘wireless debugging’ to work.” And someone mentioned seeing a “Low Power” warning with certain adapters in the comments of the 9to5G post. Not exactly the smooth upgrade everyone hoped for.
Some users say a factory reset helps. “I’ve been testing it since this morning and I can say one thing: it works faster after factory reset,” one person said. But it’s not a cure-all. Others tried resetting and still faced problems. Meanwhile, Google’s tackling separate casting issues on older Chromecasts with a fix, but that’s unrelated to this mess.
The Android 14 update brings some cool stuff to Chromecast with Google TV. No doubt about that. But for now, it’s also dishing out frustration for some. If you’re stuck, a factory reset might be worth a shot. Just don’t hold your breath for it to fix everything. Fingers crossed Google sorts this out soon.
