Just when Xbox Dead by Daylight players were reeling from the unexpected loss of cross-play, which I covered yesterday, a new, equally frustrating issue has popped up. Many are now running into dreaded “Error Code 8001” or “8005” messages, making it super hard to even get into the game, let alone actually play.
These error codes seem to be hitting Xbox users hard. Players are reporting that they can’t log in, or if they do manage to get past the initial loading screen, they can’t queue for matches. It’s a real buzzkill, especially for those trying to finish up anniversary challenges. “I keep getting an error message when I’m trying to load in the game, and when I do get in, I can’t get into a match as I get another error message,” shared Malibuken84 on Reddit, expressing the widespread frustration.
For a while, it felt like players were just stuck in a loop of trying to brute force their way in. “You just have to brute force it. Eventually it loads. Then you have to brute force picking your queue,” one user, Grand-Chart-8708, advised, highlighting how much effort it was taking just to play. Even if you got in, actually finding a game was a whole other challenge, with many getting booted right back out with another error.
The good news is that there might be a potential workaround. A Reddit user, WildcardFNRP, shared a solution that worked for them on Xbox. After trying everything from reinstalling the game to restarting their console without success, they found that tweaking their DNS settings did the trick. By manually setting their Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8
and Secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4
(or 1.1.1.1
and 1.0.0.1
), they managed to bypass the errors.
Now, while this DNS fix has worked for some, it’s worth noting that not everyone is convinced it’s a permanent solution, or even one that’s on the players’ shoulders. “I encourage players not to mess with their settings at the moment, as the issue lies with BHVR. The issue is not with the player,” commented ZacAttack081.
Still, for those desperate to get their Dead by Daylight fix, trying this DNS change might just be the workaround they need. Behaviour Interactive is reportedly aware of the ongoing Xbox issues, but there’s no definite timeline for a full fix yet. Let’s hope they sort this out soon.
