Discord is finally rolling out a highly anticipated feature that many users have been dreaming of for ages: custom themes. This isn’t just about picking from a few preset colors anymore. Now, a select group of Nitro subscribers on desktop are getting the chance to truly personalize their Discord experience with endless color combinations. It’s a game changer for those who felt stuck with the limited options available before.
For a long time, users have been asking for more ways to make Discord feel like theirs. The existing themes, like Light, Dark, Ash, and Onyx, while functional, often felt a bit too rigid for folks wanting something more unique. Many would even try to figure out how to get a custom theme on Discord using third-party tools, which weren’t always reliable or even officially supported. So, this official step by Discord is a welcome sight for those eager to ditch the drab and embrace the vibrant.
This new customization option is currently an experimental feature, meaning it’s only available to about 1% of desktop Nitro users right now. But for those lucky few, it opens up a world of creative possibilities. You can head to your User Settings, then navigate to the Appearance tab. There, under “Color Themes,” you’ll find a new “Custom Theme” icon. Clicking it brings up a sidebar where you can really go wild.
Users can choose between dark or light mode palettes and then dive into a color field and hue slider to pick their perfect shades. You can even use a color picker tool or enter precise Hex codes for that exact hue you’ve been imagining. Want a gradient? No problem. You can add up to five colors and control their flow with a gradient direction slider. There’s even a color intensity slider to adjust how vibrant everything looks. Once you’re happy, just hit “Apply” to save your masterpiece. And if you’re feeling uninspired, a “Surprise Me” button will generate random combinations for you.
It’s worth noting that if you enable the “Sync across clients” toggle on desktop, your custom theme might affect your mobile experience, though custom themes aren’t fully supported on mobile yet. So, a light custom theme on desktop could make your mobile app switch to its standard light mode.
Early reactions from users are definitely mixed, though mostly positive about the feature itself. Some are thrilled, saying the preset themes were “absolutely horrendous” anyway. Others are just hoping it becomes widely available soon. Of course, the fact that it’s a Nitro-exclusive feature is a point of contention for some, but for those who value personalization, it’s a significant upgrade that makes the subscription even more appealing.
Do let me know if this new customization feature along with other perks will tempt you to consider the Nitro subscription or not.
