Discord seems to be testing out a fresh look for the buttons in its call window, and it’s stirring up a mix of reactions among users. Posts on Reddit show screenshots of the new design, which replaces the usual circular buttons with more angular, rectangular ones. Some users are calling it a sleek change, while others aren’t too thrilled about the shift away from Discord’s rounded aesthetic.
The redesigned buttons appear to be part of an experiment or A/B test, with only a handful of users reportedly seeing the change so far. Experiments like this are often rolled out selectively before being finalized — or scrapped. If you’ve not seen the new icons/buttons, here you go:
Feedback has been all over the place. Some people appreciate the fresh design and feel it’s a step forward, but others say it looks out of place compared to Discord’s usual style. One Redditor pointed out that the rectangular buttons clash with the rounded avatars and server icons, which Discord recently updated to enhance its cohesive look. Another user said the update makes the call window feel like Zoom or Skype — definitely not the vibe Discord fans are used to.
Users who aren’t fans of the new design and want to revert to the old buttons have also expressed frustration. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be an option. Since this is an experiment, there’s no official setting to switch back.
Interestingly, some users are seeing the new buttons despite not being able to run the latest version of Discord. This has led to a bit of confusion, with one user remarking how odd it is to get UI tweaks without a full software update. Another user explained that Discord’s feature flags allow for these partial updates without requiring a new app version.
Whether the redesign sticks or not is something we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, feel free to let us know if you’re seeing the new in-call buttons too.
