Update 13/05/25 – 10:45 am (IST): Discord confirmed that it’s investigating the issue with muted conversations sending push notifications. In a status update, the team said, “we believe that the notifications are the result of some maintenance we performed on one of our backend systems and we are continuing to work to identify a fix for this issue.”

It’s unclear how long a fix will take to arrive since the last update was seven hours ago. Let us know if you’re still experiencing the bug.

Some Discord users have taken to Reddit and X over the past couple of days to report about a frustrating bug. According to complaints online, it seems many users are getting notifications from channels and DMs they’ve already muted.

Many of the reports come from iOS users running the latest Discord app and up-to-date operating systems. One user, Blind Fanatic, posted that they “started receiving notifications from channels I muted long ago on @discord, specifically on my iOS device which is up to date, both OS and application versions. Is this an issue of the latest Discord version?” Their post is just one of many that I spotted on X.

On Reddit, a user going by u/snunicycler described checking their notification settings and finding that Discord still claimed muted channels would stay silent. They wrote, “When I look at the notification settings it says I ‘won’t receive notifications from Muted channels’ but clearly I do.” That post on r/discordapp quickly picked up more than a dozen upvotes and drew comments from others facing the same headache.

The alerts are not coming from @everyone or @here pings. Users say they’re getting banners and sounds for ordinary messages in channels they have set to mute. In a smaller but similar issue, members of group DMs have noticed muted chats buzzing their phones anyway. One person reported that they had never been in group chats before, so they weren’t sure if what they saw was normal or a bug. As more people chimed in with reports, it became clear this was a widespread annoyance rather than isolated incidents.

Discord staff have not yet publicly addressed the notifications bug. Some users have tried workarounds like toggling mobile push alerts off entirely or remuting channels with different time settings. But for now those fixes offer little relief. With busy communities relying on Discord for work and social life, having muted channels suddenly shout at you is more than a minor irritation.

It’s unclear if a specific update is to blame or something got botched up on the server-side. Nevertheless, all we can do is hope for Discord to patch the bug quickly.
