Discord appears to be working on a new feature involving a virtual currency called “Orbs.” Details surfaced recently, suggesting users will be able to earn these Orbs by completing quests within the app. This isn’t the first time Discord has used quests for rewards, but the introduction of Orbs adds a new layer.

So, what can you do with these Orbs once you’ve earned them? Early information points to two main options: redeeming them for a new profile badge or exchanging them for a brief, 3-day trial of Discord Nitro.

This limited Nitro trial is raising some eyebrows. Giving users just a short taste of the premium subscription service seems like a clear strategy. The hope is likely that users will enjoy the perks for those three days and then decide to pay for a full Nitro subscription once the trial expires. It’s a classic try-before-you-buy tactic, potentially aimed at boosting Nitro conversion rates.

User reactions to this particular reward have been mixed, leaning towards skeptical. On a Reddit thread discussing the feature, user iddqdxz commented, “3 day Nitro sounds so pathetic, like.. Just don’t.. It’s 2.99$, at least allow people to grind for a month of Nitro, Discord isn’t that broke right?” Echoing this sentiment, user Petey567 added, “The nitro is so bad like they just want you to 3 day it so that you keep buying it. Nah.”

Besides the short Nitro trial, users can also aim for the new Orb-related profile badge. Based on initial testing details seen in the testing UI, obtaining the badge might not require much effort. Completing the introductory quest reportedly grants 100 Orbs, which seems to be enough to acquire the badge right away.

It’s important to remember that this Orbs system is still experimental and not available to the public yet. Features in testing can often change significantly before a wide release, or sometimes they get scrapped altogether. Nevertheless, feel free to share your thoughts on this potential new feature. Do you think it’ll be useful or is it a gimmick? Let me know in the comments below.
