Discord might be looking to give users a more direct way to flag troublesome messages within their communities. An experiment spotted in the Discord Previews channel suggests a new feature is in the works that would allow users to report messages directly to the server’s moderation team. Currently, the primary reporting option sends flags straight to Discord’s central Trust & Safety team, which handles platform-wide rule violations.

This potential new feature, revealed through screenshots shared on the Discord Previews channel, shows a “Report to Mod” option appearing alongside the existing “Report Message” function when a user interacts with a message.

The reporting process seems straightforward: users can select a category for their report, such as “Harassment” or “Breaking the server rules,” and review the message before submitting it. There’s even a “Reports” tab in the server menu, complete with notifications, so moderators can quickly see and address new issues.

Judging by the comments under the Reddit post highlighting the feature, it seems many users are all for the “Report to Mod” option. User YouKnowImDead stated, “That’s useful for mods”. Another user, judge2020, elaborated, seeing it as “Probably a good in-between for small servers who just need a quick way to get notified of reports, but don’t need a full ticket/investigation system which bots can still do.”

If rolled out, this reporting system could transform how moderation works on Discord. Right now, reporting a message typically means escalating it to Discord’s support team, which can be slow and impersonal. With this new tool, server moderators would have more control, allowing them to handle issues faster and keep their communities safer. I think this could be a win-win for users and mods alike. In fact, the whole platform in general would likely benefit with the option, if added.

While the feature is generating excitement, it’s important to remember it’s currently just an experiment. There’s always a possibility that Discord might simply stop its development on the feature at any moment. There’s no official word yet on when, or even if, this “Report to Mod” capability will become available to all users. Nevertheless, let’s hope Discord sees the positive reactions and goes ahead with it.
