Update 09/05/25 – 11:09 am (IST): Recent reports suggest that Discord has expanded the rollout of server tags to about 5% of users on the platform, up from the initial 0.1% of users. Keep in mind that the rollout is random, but there has been a slight change with how it’s being made available.
According to Discord Previews on X, “any servers created after 9pm CEST (3pm ET for Americans) today will no longer be eligible for the rollout.”

Discord has begun a limited rollout of its new server tags and gradient roles features, with only 0.1% of servers gaining access to these highly anticipated customization options. The new features, part of what Discord internally calls “tierless boosting,” allow servers to spend boosts on specific perks rather than traditional level unlocks.
Server tags let community members showcase their server affiliations with custom 4-character identifiers paired with an icon. Meanwhile, gradient roles introduce eye-catching color transitions and holographic effects that make important roles stand out. Both features require three server boosts to unlock, separate from the traditional boost level system.
Some users have already found ways to game the system. Reddit user team_fortress69 claimed to have gained access to the features on multiple servers: “Already botted this. I have 13 servers with this beta test lol,” they wrote. When asked how they managed this feat, they explained, “Yeah me and a mate made a script which makes a bunch of servers.” According to the user, they created approximately “700-800” servers to increase their chances of being included in the 0.1% rollout.
For those wondering how to check if they have access, team_fortress69 advised, “Nelly tools or set the server to community and the option for boosts stuff will appear.”
The extremely limited release has left many long-time Discord users feeling excluded. Reddit user baltarius voiced their frustration: “Experimental features and limited features are just adding more frustration. In 8 years, not once I’ve been in those beta/experimental features and seeing everyone else around having them is infuriating. Just stop teasing and start giving everyone the same features.”
Another user, MrSoulShifter, added, “never have i, not 1 of these early access features… even after having nitro for 8 years.”
The new features follow Discord’s previous handling of guild tags, which were removed in March 2025. But then we did spot evidence that the platform was ready to reintroduce the feature with new requirements. According to Discord Previews on X, the current experimental rollout is designed to test user engagement before a wider release.
For the lucky few with access, server owners and admins can enable these perks through the Server Boosts tab if they have at least three boosts available. Once unlocked, gradient roles can be freely applied to as many roles as desired, offering color customization options that work alongside existing features like role icons.
Whether the wider Discord community will gain access soon remains uncertain, as the company continues its pattern of gradual feature rollouts based on user engagement metrics and testing results.
