Discord is working on a new group DM feature aimed at enhancing user safety and control. This comes hot on the heels of last month’s test of a “last seen” feature.
The new group DM feature, currently under testing, will alert users if someone they have blocked joins the same group conversation. Presumably, this should also work similarly when joining a group DM with someone you’ve blocked. This proactive alert system gives users a heads-up and several options to choose from. You can opt to exit the group DM if you wish not to interact with the blocked person or choose to remain in the group. Discord also provides helpful information about leaving and rejoining the group to ensure users make informed decisions.
A screenshot of the feature, shared on Reddit, sparked positive reactions from users. Several have expressed enthusiasm for the increased control over their interactions, especially in group settings.
“It’s always good seeing more ways to avoid blocked users,” one Redditor commented. “I like this update. Not bad!” said another. Some users also shared their hopes for additional features, such as the ability to hide messages from blocked users entirely, similar to how blocking functions on Reddit.
This new feature is enjoying a rare positive reception compared to other recent Discord changes. It’s always great to have more agency over our interactions, so this is a great addition that makes Discord a comfortable environment for all.
The feature is currently being tested, and there is no official word on when it will be rolled out to all users. However, based on the positive reception from some Discord users, it’s safe to say that this feature will be a welcome addition to the platform.
Discord’s focus on user comfort and privacy is evident with this new feature. It aligns with their recent testing of a “last seen” feature spotted last month, which also aims to give users more control over their interactions on the platform.
