Discord appears to be testing a new feature that will let users revisit and restore their old profile pictures with a few clicks. The platform will start archiving previous avatars, making it easier to switch back to a past look without digging through old files. Free users will have access to their two most recent uploads, while those subscribed to Nitro can unlock up to six archived avatars. The feature was highlighted in a post on Reddit a few hours ago.
This aims to solve a common annoyance for users who frequently change their profile images. Many have shared that they often re-crop or re-upload the same images for different servers or moods. One Reddit user mentioned they’ve had to manually save and re-crop avatars for years, calling Discord’s current system “a hassle.” Others praised the feature for streamlining this process, with one person noting it’s “actually useful” for rotating seasonal or themed looks.
Not everyone is thrilled, though. A vocal group of users criticized Discord for locking the bulk of the feature behind its Nitro subscription, which starts at $9.99 per month. Comments like “even this is limited without Nitro” and “why not make it like Facebook?” popped up in the thread, reflecting frustration over yet another perk tied to paid tiers. Some argued that storing a handful of images shouldn’t be a premium add-on, comparing it to “making guests pay for snacks at your house.”
But some users did push back, pointing out that Discord remains free for core features like messaging and voice chats. Several users acknowledged that minor perks like avatar archives help fund the platform without resorting to ads or stricter limits on free accounts. “Storage isn’t free, and Nitro has to offer something,” one comment read. Others added that trivial bonuses — unlike restricted messaging or voice chat times — are a fair trade-off to keep the base app accessible.
It’s not clear if and when Discord will start rolling out the feature widely, but those who frequently switch up their avatars will surely appreciate the addition.
