Facebook users have been scratching their heads over a peculiar gray box that’s been showing up in their app lately. It appears out of nowhere, often while scrolling through videos or interacting with posts. The box contains a single number, like 134 or 255, and it doesn’t respond to taps or swipes. It sticks around as you navigate the app but vanishes when you close and reopen it.

This oddity first caught attention on Reddit, where people shared screenshots and theories. In one thread, a user described encountering it multiple times during extended sessions on the platform. Others chimed in, noting it happens on different devices but seems tied to specific actions.

Another post on r/pixel_phones shed more light, with users on Google Pixel devices reporting the issue while browsing Facebook. They figured out a way to replicate it – by long-pressing the comments or shares button on videos. It looks like the box is meant to display interaction counts, like the number of comments, but it’s glitching out and appearing as a floating overlay.

From what users have pieced together, this seems like a minor UI bug in the Facebook app, possibly affecting Android users more prominently. Facebook hasn’t issued any official statement yet, but it’s likely a harmless bug that’ll be fixed soon.

I recall highlighting a similar problem in the Facebook app for iOS just a few months ago. Back then, users reported a gray box appearing each time they tried to type. Users were concerned about a privacy breach or censorship, but it was just an unintended bug that got fixed in a few days.

For now, the workaround is simple: restart the app, and the box disappears. If you’re seeing it, you’re not alone. As more reports trickle in, Meta might roll out a fix in an upcoming update.
