Firefox users can now enjoy a smoother TikTok experience, thanks to a recent update that tackles a major performance bottleneck on the platform. The update, version 136.0.3, makes scrolling through TikTok feeds and watching videos much more responsive. However, it’s not all good news — there’s a new bug affecting YouTube’s Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature on Android devices.
Before this update, many Firefox users found TikTok nearly unusable. Scrolling was painfully slow, videos stuttered, and loading profile pages felt like waiting for paint to dry. The problem came from a function called toLocaleDateString, which was being overused and bogging down the CPU. To fix this, the update now caches the date formatting, cutting down on the heavy lifting the browser has to do. The result? A much snappier TikTok experience that feels like it should.
But while TikTok users are celebrating, some Android users are scratching their heads over a new issue with YouTube’s PiP feature. Instead of showing the video in a small, floating window, PiP mode now displays only the video’s controls and UI elements — no actual video, and no sound. One frustrated user on Reddit, u/NoPornH3re, put it this way: “It used to just be the thumbnail with a play button, but now it’s this weird thing. Can only get them to play double paned.” Others have chimed in, confirming that the bug is hitting many.
The issue seems tied to how Firefox manages media playback in PiP mode on Android. When users try to use PiP for YouTube videos, the floating window pops up but shows the wrong content, making the feature pretty much useless. It’s a letdown for anyone who relies on PiP to multitask while watching videos.
Mozilla knows about the bug and is likely working on a fix for a future update. For now, Android users who depend on YouTube’s PiP might need to find a workaround or hold tight for a patch.
That said, if you use TikTok via the Firefox browser, then look out for the Firefox v136.0.3 update that’s now out for users on the Release Channel.
