Fitbit users with different device models discovered a frustrating bug this week that keeps changing their display settings without permission. The Screen Wake option, which controls whether the watch display turns on automatically or only with a button press, keeps flipping from Manual back to Auto mode. The problem affects the Charge 6, Versa 4, Sense 2, and Inspire 3.
Complaints started flooding Fitbit community forums and Reddit a couple of days ago. Users noticed the setting reverting to Auto every time the Fitbit app syncs with their watch, which can happen multiple times throughout the day.
One Inspire 3 owner on Reddit said they spent all day trying to keep it set to button-only wake mode with no luck. The usual troubleshooting steps aren’t helping. People tried factory resets, clearing user data, restarting from the charging cable, changing clockfaces, and toggling Sleep Mode on and off. Nothing stops the setting from switching back after the next sync.
Battery drain is becoming the main complaint. When Screen Wake is set to Auto, the display lights up with every wrist movement throughout the day. Users who normally keep it on Manual to stretch battery life are now watching their devices die much faster. Charge 6 owners typically get around 9 days of battery with Manual mode, but that advantage disappears when the setting keeps reverting.
A Fitbit community mod acknowledged the issue in responses posted yesterday across multiple forum threads. “We’re aware of it and are working to identify a resolution as quickly as possible,” the moderator wrote.
One Reddit user who contacted Google support also received confirmation that it’s a known issue and a fix will arrive in the next update.
The timing suggests a server-side or app update might have triggered the bug rather than device firmware. Most affected users are running Fitbit app version 4.62.1 on Android, though the problem appears regardless of which firmware version is on the watch itself.
Google hasn’t provided a timeline for when the Screen Wake fix will roll out, but I suspect it’ll be fixed sooner rather than later. For now, users have no choice but to deal with the battery hit from Auto mode or constantly press the button to check the time.
