In the wake of recent setbacks for AI wearables like the Rabbit R1 and Humane’s AI Pin, a new contender has emerged on the scene. Avi Schiffmann, a young entrepreneur, has unveiled “Friend,” an AI companion that apparently aims to redefine our relationship with technology.

Unlike its predecessors, Friend isn’t focused on productivity or task management. Instead, it’s designed to be exactly what its name suggests – a friend. The device, a glowing orb worn as a pendant or clipped to clothing, is equipped with a microphone to capture ambient sound or direct conversations. Users interact with Friend primarily through a smartphone app, where the AI responds via text.

In an interview with The Verge, Schiffmann’s noted that his vision for Friend is rooted in the belief that AI’s true potential lies in companionship rather than utility. He cites the success of platforms like Character.AI and Replika as evidence that people are seeking meaningful connections with AI. Friend aims to take this concept further by being a constant presence in users’ lives.

The product is still in its early stages, with plans to ship 30,000 devices in January 2025 at $99 each. Schiffmann is candid about the challenges ahead, particularly in hardware development.

Reactions to Friend’s announcement have been mixed. While some tech enthusiasts express excitement, others remain skeptical. Even MKBHD, a prominent tech reviewer, quipped on X, “Wait, this isn’t a skit?” highlighting the disbelief surrounding yet another AI wearable launch.

Despite the skepticism, Schiffmann remains confident in his product’s potential. He envisions Friend.com evolving into a social network that blends real-life and AI friendships. I just hope it doesn’t end up replicating Butterflies.AI. We’ll just have to wait for tech reviewers to get their hands on the device for a better idea about the product.
