Update 11/03/25 – 09:22 am (IST): Google has confirmed that it’s aware of the bug and is currently working on a fix. Here’s what a product expert mentioned in response to a complaint on Google’s support forums:

We’re aware of an emerging issue impacting Chromecast 2nd gen and Chromecast Audio devices and are working on a fix. Do not factory reset your device – we will keep you all updated when the fix rolls out. If you have already factory reset your device, we will provide instructions to set your device back up as soon as possible.

Original article published on March 10, 2025, follows:

Google Chromecast 2nd Gen and Chromecast Audio users are facing a major issue as they aren’t able to cast anything. When they try to cast their favorite shows or tunes, an annoying “Untrusted device” error pops up, stopping them in their tracks. The problem has been ongoing for several hours and has left many complaining.

Users have tried resetting their devices to factory settings, only to discover they can’t even get past the setup screen. This isn’t just a local glitch either. Reports are flooding in from all corners of the world — including places like the UK, Spain, Brazil, and Canada. It’s clear this outage is throwing a wrench into the daily routines of countless Chromecast fans everywhere.

This has sparked some wild theories. A few users think Google might be bricking these older devices on purpose to nudge people toward newer models. But that seems unlikely. Google hasn’t said anything about ending support for these gadgets. Compare that to the original Chromecast, which got an official end-of-life notice in 2023 but still works today. Most likely, this is just a glitch.

Here’s a bit of good news though. Google knows about the issue. Users who’ve reached out to support say the company has confirmed the problem and is working on a solution. No one knows exactly when a fix will roll out, but it’s a relief to hear they’re on the case.

The Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio came out back in 2015. They’re almost ten years old, which is ancient in tech years. Still, they’ve been reliable for streaming until this hiccup. Since the issue ties to authentication, Google might be able to roll out a server-side fix. That would mean no effort is required from users.

For now, the advice is simple. Hang tight for an update from Google. If you haven’t reset your device yet, don’t. It will save you the headache of setting things up from scratch once the fix arrives.

Does this mean that all Google products are about to go out of service? I'm building a smart home and now my Chromecast isn't working in the house. I have four that control the TV through Google Home. None of them work. Do I need to change to a Chinese product or what do I do?
