Over the past couple of weeks, some Google Maps users have been reporting a frustrating issue where the once-reliable audible alerts for speed cameras have gone silent. This problem emerged following a mid-June update to Android Auto, leaving drivers unaware of upcoming speed traps.

Users from the various regions such as the UK, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, and Canada have voiced their concerns on various online forums. They have checked their settings, ensuring that sound is enabled and notifications are turned on, yet Google Maps speed camera alerts remain stubbornly silent on Android Auto. Despite thorough troubleshooting — restarting devices, checking settings, and even reinstalling apps — the problem persists.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a Google-owned navigation app has faced this issue. A couple of months ago, Waze users reported a similar problem with missing speed camera alerts. While it’s unclear if the two incidents are directly related, the fact that both platforms have stumbled upon the same issue raises eyebrows.

The missing speed camera alerts, which rolled out last year, have left drivers feeling vulnerable and frustrated. “I rely on the alerts,” lamented one user, highlighting the importance of this feature for safe and responsible driving. Another user pointed out the irony of the situation, noting that while Google Maps visually displays speed camera icons, it fails to provide the crucial audio warning.

The lack of official communication from Google has only fueled the frustration. It’s unclear if this is a bug, an intentional change, or a temporary glitch. In the meantime, you may have to rely on other means to avoid speeding tickets, such as constantly checking your screen or switching to alternative navigation apps. Some users have also found temporary success by installing older versions of Google Maps (June 2 release or older), and they seem to work fine until you update to the latest version.

With the issue continuing to affect a growing number of users, it’s possible Google will soon pick it up and hopefully acknowledge and address the problem, if not already with the new Android Auto v12.3 update. The safety and peace of mind of countless drivers hang in the balance, waiting for the tech giant to restore the missing speed camera alerts and bring back the familiar “ding” that keeps them informed and protected on the road.
