Google Maps users have been dealing with a frustrating bug for a few weeks. A bug has wiped out their Timeline data, leaving many without years of location history. Reports suggest this issue kicked off around March 7, 2025.
The Timeline feature lets people track where they’ve been. It’s handy for recalling trips, logging work travel, or even keeping a personal record of adventures. But since early March, users have noticed something alarming. Data before March 7, 2025, has vanished for many. Some say only recent info remains, while others spot random chunks of older data hanging on. This patchy pattern has folks suspecting a glitch in the system.
About two weeks ago, 9to5Google first flagged the issue. Since then, complaints have kept rolling in. Users are venting on Google’s community forums, desperate for answers. One person wrote, “I use my Timeline data as my digital diary of business hours. I rely on this data for billing purposes.”
Another shared, “I went to check my timeline history today and my entire history is missing, back in the summer I believe I transferred everything over to my phone to be local, and it’s set up so there is no auto delete.” Their post now has over a thousand votes from others who claim to have the same problem.
The loss stings, especially for those who followed Google’s advice to store data locally and disable auto-delete. This feels like déjà vu since many users experienced similar problems even during the shift last year.
Luckily, Google hasn’t turned a blind eye to the problem. According to a post by a product expert, the company is aware of the problem and is working on a fix. Sadly, there’s no ETA for when this fix might arrive. Here’s what the product expert said:
After reading through the sea of comments, I wasn’t able to find any potential workarounds. People have tried quick fixes like restarting their phones, force-stopping the app, toggling the Timeline settings. Nothing’s worked so far. The problem persists, and fresh reports keep popping up.
For now, the only thing you can do is wait and hope Google fixes the mess. I’ll keep an eye out for any further developments and will post an update here.
