Google has finally addressed a critical issue plaguing Pixel 6 series devices with its latest August 2024 security update. The update, which is likely to be the last major patch before Android 15 rolls out, brings a fix for the notorious boot loop bug that has been causing headaches for Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a users.

The boot loop problem emerged earlier this year, with users reporting their devices becoming unusable after attempting a factory reset. Many found themselves stuck in Android Recovery mode or caught in an endless reboot cycle, often accompanied by an error message mentioning “Unable to enable ext4 verity” and a missing “tune2fs” file.

Google’s initial response to the issue was met with frustration from the Pixel community. Some users, particularly those out of warranty, were quoted high repair costs for what many believed to be a software-related problem. The situation led to heated discussions about consumer rights and highlighted the disadvantages Pixel users face due to limited repair options compared to competitors like Apple and Samsung.

The August 2024 update, carrying the build number AP2A.240805.005, is rolling out to eligible devices in phases. While it may take up to a week to reach all users, the update brings welcome relief to those affected by the boot loop issue. Google’s changelog specifically mentions a “Fix for issue occasionally causing devices to be in a reboot loop after factory reset in certain conditions” for Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6a.

In addition to addressing the boot loop problem, the update includes several other improvements:
