Nothing ruins a morning quite like oversleeping because your phone decided to take a break from its most basic function. If you’re a Google Pixel user who’s been jolted awake by the realization that your alarm never went off, you’re definitely not alone. This frustrating issue has been plaguing Pixel owners across multiple device generations, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.

The problem isn’t just annoying — it’s causing real consequences. People are missing work meetings, arriving late to important appointments, and some have even faced disciplinary action because their trusted device failed them when they needed it most. What makes this particularly maddening is the cryptic error message some users receive after the fact: “Alarm did not fire due to an unknown reason.” Thanks for nothing, Google.

A widespread nightmare across Pixel models

This alarm chaos isn’t limited to just one device. Reports are flooding in from users of the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 lineup, and the newer Pixel 9 devices. The issue seems to affect both budget and premium models equally, suggesting this is a software problem rather than hardware-specific.

One frustrated user recently shared a screenshot of the issue, stating, “The hell is that supposed to mean??? You just can’t say that as a reason for not firing an alarm, they are set for important things.” The thread garnered close to two thousand upvotes in just a day.

Another user noted that they were “late to work by 2 hours because of this.”  The randomness of these failures makes them particularly cruel. Your phone might work perfectly for weeks, lulling you into a false sense of security, only to fail on the one morning when you absolutely cannot afford to be late.

This isn’t new — it’s a recurring nightmare

Here’s the thing that makes this whole situation even more frustrating: Google has dealt with similar alarm issues repeatedly over the years. Back in 2021, the Google Clock app version 6.4 caused widespread problems, particularly with Spotify-based alarm sounds that would mysteriously go silent.

In March 2024, Google Assistant developed a nasty habit where asking it to “turn off all alarms” would completely delete every saved alarm instead of just disabling them. Then, October 2024 brought the Android 15 release, which triggered another wave of alarm failures that had users scrambling for backup solutions.

What’s actually causing this mess?

Unfortunately, since Google hasn’t offered up any statements regarding the problem, it’s not easy to pinpoint what might be causing the issue. However, we can say for certain that it’s likely a perfect storm of software conflicts that trigger the bug.

One major culprit is Android’s increasingly aggressive battery optimization. When your phone decides the Clock app doesn’t need to run in the background, it can literally prevent your alarms from triggering. This is especially problematic when battery-saver mode kicks in during the night.

The relationship between Bedtime mode, Do Not Disturb settings, and alarm functionality creates another layer of complexity. Users report that alarms work fine during daytime testing but fail when bedtime mode is active overnight. For those with Pixel Watches, alarm synchronization between the phone and watch can also malfunction, leading to missed alarms on both devices.

Of course, at times, it could also be possible that a bug may have been introduced with a recent app update or system update, which prevents alarms from going off. In such a situation, like in 2021, Google will probably address the problem since it would be easy to replicate.

Interestingly, in my own experience, I noticed that if your phone restarts for whatever reason when the alarm was supposed to ring, you’ll see the notification saying it “did not fire due to unknown reasons.” I only observed this because I restarted my Pixel 7a to install a system update just as an alarm was supposed to go off. Upon restarting, I saw the notification.

Potential solutions that might help

If you’re dealing with this right now, I’ve read over two dozen threads and hundreds of comments, and here’s what I found helped some users. First, clear your Clock app’s data and cache completely. Go to Settings > Apps > Clock > Storage & cache, then clear both cache and storage. You’ll need to set up your alarms again, but this often resolves the underlying corruption.

The backup alarm strategy is crucial. Set multiple alarms 1-2 minutes apart using different sounds for each one. This increases your chances that at least one will work even if the system glitches.

For bedtime mode users, consider creating separate Do Not Disturb schedules instead of relying on bedtime mode integration. Make sure alarm exceptions are properly configured in your DND settings. This reduces the complexity that can lead to conflicts.

Just note that none of these potential fixes are guaranteed to work for you. Since there could be more than one reason for the alarm not ringing, what works for someone might not necessarily work for everyone.

Alternative solutions worth considering

Third-party alarm apps have become lifesavers for many Pixel users. Alarmy is popular because it requires you to solve math problems or take photos to turn off the alarm, making it nearly impossible to sleep through. Sleep as Android offers smart wake-up during light sleep phases and integrates well with wearables. AMdroid provides location-based alarms and holiday detection, while Alarm Clock Xtreme includes gradual volume increase and snooze limitations.

Don’t overlook physical backup systems either. Many users have returned to traditional alarm clocks as their primary backup, with smart speakers like Alexa or Google Home set independently as secondary options. Some keep alarms on tablets or secondary devices just in case.

The bigger picture

This ongoing reliability crisis highlights a broader problem with smartphone dependence. As these devices become more complex and feature-rich, even basic functions like alarm clocks can become unreliable. The fact that these issues span multiple Android versions and Pixel generations suggests users can’t count on Google to provide a definitive solution anytime soon.

Taking proactive measures to ensure reliable wake-up calls isn’t just recommended for Pixel users — it’s become necessary to avoid real-world consequences that can impact your career, health, and daily responsibilities. The convenience of using your phone as an alarm clock comes with risks that many people don’t consider until it’s too late.

Your morning routine is too important to leave to chance, especially when there’s documented evidence that your device might let you down when you need it most.
