It looks like some movies are no longer available for purchase on Google TV, and Disney titles seem to be affected. Users have noticed this change in recent weeks, marking a shift from what Google had previously promised.

In 2024, Google announced that TV show purchases would no longer be supported on Google TV. They directed users to YouTube for future purchases, ending the sync between the two platforms for TV content. At the time, Google assured users that this would not impact movie purchases. But now, it seems some films are also being affected, as reported by 9to5Google.

Older Disney movies, like Star Wars and Toy Story, are among the titles without purchase options. Instead, Google TV suggests streaming them on Disney+ (or in my case – Hotstar). On TV devices, the “watch now” button appears without any rental or purchase links. However, these movies can still be bought or rented through the YouTube app.

The issue isn’t limited to Disney. Some movies from other studios are also only available through streaming services like Max. Yet, many newer films, including Inside Out 2, still offer purchase options on Google TV.

This might be a catalog bug rather than a deliberate removal of movie purchases. Google TV remains a popular choice for watching films due to its focused experience, which many users prefer over YouTube. Still, this change has caused some confusion, especially with Disney’s extensive catalog.

We’ll keep an eye out for any updates from Google about what’s going on. You can bookmark this page as we’ll be posting updates if and when there are any further developments.
