Google has confirmed it is aware of an issue affecting PayPal in-store payments through Google Wallet. Many users have reported problems with contactless payments since the start of 2025. A fix is in the works and will be rolled out soon, according to a brief notice on Google Wallet’s support forums.
Complaints about the issue have been widespread. On Reddit, users from various countries, including Germany and the U.S., complained about the same problem. One user in Germany said they’ve been unable to use PayPal or any credit card linked to their Google Wallet since January 1. They mentioned trying multiple troubleshooting steps, including restarting their device and reinstalling payment methods, but nothing worked. Another user noted the same issue with their Pixel 8 Pro, adding that a PayPal customer service representative acknowledged the problem as being on Google’s side.
Some users found temporary workarounds, like using PayPal’s own app to enable contactless payments. However, these solutions require extra steps, such as opening the PayPal app and selecting a specific option before each transaction. Many found this inconvenient compared to the seamless experience Google Wallet provides.
The problem doesn’t seem tied to a specific device. Affected users reported issues on a range of devices, from the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to the Pixel 6a. For most, the issue began on January 1.
While Google has yet to provide a detailed explanation, users are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of communication. Some said they have temporarily switched to using other cards in their wallets or avoided using Google Wallet altogether.
Until Google releases the promised fix, many users remain stuck with unreliable payment options. For now, it’s a waiting game.
