If your iPhone’s Calculator app is clinging to numbers from old calculations on iOS 18, you’re not alone. Some users have reported that after performing calculations and closing the app, the numbers reappear the next time the app is opened, even after repeatedly hitting “AC” to clear them. No matter what they do, the last-used numbers keep popping up, making it frustrating to start a new calculation.

One user described the problem:

Whenever I open the calculator up it has retained the numbers I entered into it when I did my first calculation with this new iOS. Even if I completely clear it, repeatedly (lots of “ACs”) when I am finished with a calculation, the next time I open it up those same numbers appear in the calculation field and they need to be cleared before I can begin my new calculation.

Interestingly, we’ve come across reports about the issue during iOS 18’s beta testing phase too. This indicates that despite Apple likely getting a whiff of the problem, they chose to ignore it for the public iOS 18 release.

Fortunately, there seems to be a simple fix for the problem as confirmed by a few users. All you need to do is delete the Calculator app and then reinstall it. To do this, press and hold the Calculator app icon, select “Remove App,” and then reinstall it from the App Store

This should reset the app completely and prevent old calculations from returning the next time you open it. While this might seem like an annoying step, it’s currently the best solution until Apple addresses the issue in a future update.

If you don’t want to delete the app, another user found a temporary solution: after finishing your calculation, hit AC, enter 0, and press =. Then, close the app. This method ensures that when you reopen the app, it starts fresh at zero.

I wasn’t able to replicate the bug on my iPhone 13 running the new iOS 18.1 RC build, nor was it present on the few previous beta builds as far as I can recall. So maybe, just maybe, Apple might have fixed the problem with iOS 18.1 It should be arriving for everyone shortly.
