For those of you who landed on this article hoping to find a way to get rid of Spotify’s recently added ‘Resuming’ announcement functionality, let me quickly share with you two ways to do that. However, please be informed that these are not my personal recommendations or coming officially from Spotify. These two workarounds did the trick for a couple of users. So I thought I should share them with a wider audience through this article.

The first workaround, in fact, was suggested by Spotify support on X (Twitter). While responding to a user troubled by this new feature, the Spotify Support account suggested reinstalling the app and also applying pending updates to the app (if any). And thankfully, the user confirmed that these steps helped them in turning off the ‘Resuming’ announcement feature. Following is the interaction I am talking about:

And the second workaround is to do a simple logout from the app and again log back in. At least one user, who commented about this on Reddit, confirmed it worked for them.

Well, that’s all I found when it comes to disabling this new feature. I’ll repeat, these workarounds are not coming straight from the horse’s mouth, so they may not work as desired for everyone. However, I sincerely hope they do.

What’s going on?

Well, in case you landed on this article to understand what’s going on, then I’ll explain it in this section. Basically, if I go by reports that I have seen so far, Spotify seems to have flipped a server-side switch for a new feature that announces whatever you were listening to earlier (every time you switch back to the app). The announcement goes like “Resuming …” followed by the playlist or the album info. The following comment should give you a good idea of the change:

I have been dealing with an ongoing issue for years when I am connected to my car’s Bluetooth that if I pause a track, switch out of the app, and then switch back into the app, it automatically starts playing the track again that it was paused on. But this morning, the app would preface unpausing the track automatically by first announcing “Resuming (insert name of playlist” or “Resuming (insert name of album)”.

Now, this feature comes into action only when the phone is connected through Bluetooth to some other device (like a car). However, many users say this is a useless addition as they don’t see any value addition in it. I kind of agree. I mean, I would anyway be looking at my phone while launching (or switching to) the Spotify app, so this info would be right in front of my eyes.

And if being ‘useless’ wasn’t enough, reports also claim that ‘resuming’ announcement disables shuffle as well as repeat features.

While I could see many users complaining about this new functionality, some confirmed they aren’t seeing it. This means either it’s a slow or phased roll out, or it’s just an experiment that Spotify is carrying out on a limited number of users. But, going by the voices I have heard so far, one thing seems likely: Not many Spotify users are going to appreciate it.

Anyway, I’ll keep a tab on the matter, and if I get further info on it, I’ll update this article. In case you have any more info on this topic (or in case you find any other workaround to disable the ‘resuming’ announcement), please don’t hesitate to use the comments section at the bottom of this page to share your thoughts. Thanks in advance.
