Instagram recently expanded Notes to Reels and feed but some users weren’t exactly thrilled and even felt turning it off was a better idea. But this hasn’t stopped Instagram from experimenting with the Notes feature, and the latest attempt looks to take advantage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with the addition of what we’ve christened Gold Notes.

In a move that seems perfectly timed with the grand finale of the 2024 Olympic Games, Instagram has silently rolled out what many are calling “Gold Notes.” Yep, you read that right — your Notes can now shine like an Olympic gold medal, but only if you know the magic words.

What’s the deal with Gold Notes?

Instagram is all about keeping things fresh and fun, and Gold Notes are their latest experiment, so it seems. Essentially, it’s a snazzy effect that turns your Notes’ text into a glowing golden hue, mimicking the glitter of Olympic gold. It’s like giving your words a medal of their own.

Why the golden touch? Well, it seems Instagram is getting into the Olympic spirit, celebrating the thrilling victories like Africa’s first-ever gold medal in the 200M and Pakistan’s javelin triumph with a new Olympic record. But don’t worry, you don’t need to be an Olympian to get in on the action — you just need to know how to unlock this feature.

How to unlock Gold Notes on Instagram

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Instagram didn’t just hand out Gold Notes to everyone like confetti. Instead, they’ve hidden the feature behind a few trigger words. If you want your Notes to shine, you’ll need to include specific words when composing them.

Here are some of the magic words that have been discovered so far:

  • Gold
  • Olympic
  • Olympics
  • Olympian
  • GOAT
  • Medal
  • Podium
  • Torch
  • Champion
  • Victory

Emojis like the 🥇 (gold medal) and 🐐 (GOAT) also do the trick. And if you’re feeling international, the word “oro” (Spanish for gold) works just as well.

Before you start typing away, there’s something you should know: Gold Notes aren’t available to everyone just yet. It seems Instagram is rolling out this feature in select regions, so if your Notes don’t turn gold like yours truly, don’t panic — you might just have to wait a bit longer.

Even with the right words, I couldn’t get my Notes to gleam, which feels a bit like I missed the podium. But don’t let that stop you from trying. Who knows, you might just strike gold.
