Frustrated Instagram and Facebook users are taking matters into their own hands after experiencing what they call wrongful mass account suspensions. And now it seems the frustration is boiling over as many affected users are banding together with a Change.org petition and threatening legal action against Meta Platforms Inc.

The petition, titled “Meta Wrongfully Disabling Accounts with No Human Customer Support,” has already garnered over 2,200 signatures from users worldwide who claim their accounts were disabled without justification. The petition was created by Brittany WS, who argues that Meta’s AI moderation system is causing widespread false flags that lock users out of their digital lives.

As we highlighted yesterday, hundreds (if not thousands) of users have reported sudden account bans citing “child sexual exploitation” as the reason, despite posting content that clearly falls within platform guidelines. The accusations range from sharing family photos to posting artwork and music videos. One father’s account was flagged after posting pictures from his child’s kindergarten graduation, while artists and musicians found years of work wiped away overnight.

The petition outlines several key demands for Meta. Users want the company to fix its AI moderation system to reduce false flags, establish a clear and timely appeal process, and provide genuine human support for users. They’re also demanding that Meta stop monetizing broken support services, referring to the Meta Verified subscription that costs $14.99 monthly but often fails to provide the promised enhanced support.

Reddit communities have become organizing hubs for affected users. One user, xElemeno, posted a formal “Letter of Intent to Sue” that they planned to send via certified mail to Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The letter accuses Meta of slander and defamation, claiming the false child exploitation allegations could have life-altering consequences for users who work in sensitive industries requiring background checks.

The legal document demands account reinstatement and an investigation into the AI moderation system, threatening to seek compensation and remedial measures if Meta doesn’t respond within 30 days. Other users have expressed interest in joining potential class action lawsuits, with one affected user stating they lost over 30 business accounts, causing “unimaginable financial damage.”

However, the movement faces significant challenges. Meta deals with such lawsuits frequently and has nearly unlimited legal resources compared to individual users. The company’s terms of service include provisions that allow account suspension for various reasons, making legal action difficult.

Change.org petitions in situations like these historically haven’t proven particularly effective against major tech companies. Meta has faced similar controversies before, without making substantial policy changes based on online petitions alone.

Users report that appeal processes are largely automated, with rejections coming within minutes. “I appealed and the same AI shockingly rejected and permabanned me,” wrote one user. The lack of human oversight in both initial moderation and appeals has become a central complaint.

The movement represents growing frustration with big tech platforms’ reliance on automated systems without adequate human oversight. Whether the petition and legal threats will force Meta to address the underlying issues remains uncertain. Interestingly, a South Korean media outlet reported that a local spokesperson for Meta did inform them that this is something that is “under investigation.”

That said, the organized response shows users are no longer willing to accept account suspensions without fighting back. For now, affected users continue documenting their experiences and building their case for potential legal action, hoping that collective pressure might succeed where individual appeals have failed.

Hi i am stuck in a whole other country far away from home, and nobody has money to send me home immediately. Instagram was how i kept in touch with people in my community and showed i was safe, now its permanently gone. I cant even get into facebook, and nobody who can help can contact me now. I am also autistic and non binary, and very very scared every second because i cannot speak the language here, and with a translation nobody takes me serious.

My Instagram account was suspended without reason on June 8th. I didn’t break any rules at all, and appealing the suspension didn’t help at all.

懇請協助重新審查,並恢復我的帳號使用權限,謝謝![email protected] TRANSLATED: My account was disabled, but I did not violate Facebook's community guidelines. I just turned off two-factor authentication on May 22. I had enabled professional mode, and the system later asked me to log in again, but I was unable to complete the verification process. My account was not stolen, and I did not commit any violations. It must have been misjudged by the system. Please help review and restore my account access, thank you!

On June 9, 2025, I received a notice from meta that my Facebook account ([email protected]) was suspended. After appealing according to your company's complaint pipeline, my account was suspended and said that I violated the regulations on juvenile sexual exploitation by the community. I usually use this account to like, watch memes, etc. If you want to disable my account, at least tell me my remarks or sharing that led to this result. Please kindly ask meta to review my account again.

Dear Instagram Support Team, I am writing to formally appeal the recent deactivation of my Instagram account: rpou2314. On June 14, 2025, I received a notice stating that my account was permanently disabled due to a violation of the Community Guidelines, specifically related to child sexual exploitation, abuse, or nudity. I want to clarify that I have never shared, posted, or engaged in any content that could be interpreted in such a way. I believe this may have been a mistake, false report, or an error made by the automated moderation system. I respectfully request a manual review of my account. This account is very important to me, and I would like the opportunity to explain or clarify any misunderstanding. Please find attached screenshots of the message I received. I am willing to provide any further information if needed. Thank you for your time and understanding. Sincerely rpou2314 Instagram Username: rpou2314

I am an Instagram user whose account @yuc_0621 was recently disabled due to a violation related to nudity or sexual exploitation. However, I have never posted any content that violates Instagram's community guidelines. I have attempted all official appeal channels, but so far, I have not been able to restore access to my account, nor have I been able to contact a real support representative. This account holds deep personal value to me, containing years of memories with family and friends. By joining this petition, I hope Meta will recognize the issue of wrongful account suspensions and establish a fair and effective appeal process to protect users' rights.

My Instagram account was blocked on April 15th for no apparent reason. I did not break any rules and there was no point in appealing.

Dear Support Team, On May 30, I received a Gmail notification about a suspicious login to my Twitter account. I couldn’t change the password in time. After that, my connected Instagram and Threads accounts were disabled. On June 2, my Facebook account was suddenly deactivated with a message saying it violated rules about “exploitation of children’s letters.” I tried to appeal and upload a verification video, but the process failed—I never got a real chance to complete the verification. I created a new account on the same day, but it was quickly disabled again due to your system detecting it as violating integrity policies. I’ve used my original account for years. It includes many personal memories, photos, and travel records. This unexpected shutdown is very upsetting. Please help me recover my account or guide me on what I can do next. I’m willing to provide any verification needed.

This happened to me. Completely out of the blue. They deleted my IG account and did not even have the decency to let me appeal their decision. My account was over 10 yo and it was the most generic account possible. Selfies of myself or landscapes posted every 3-4 months. My stories mostly consisted of food videos or pictures. I rarely ever left comments. Yet, then nuked my account for violating their violence & terrorism community guidelines ?!?!?! Completely unfair and they made me lose over 10 years of memories. This can happen to anyone, so y'all better back up your most precious photos and convos before also becoming a victim of their incompetence.

Was using my cellphone number and another prior user of my phone number from 3-4 years ago started using my number as their cell phone number. Next thing i know I am losing access to my account and believe the former cell phone user of my number started doing irrational things. Now I am on a 180 day ban. I appealed it a week ago, and not i am on 180 day ban. I don't think i will hear from a real human and it says I was using Facebook marketplace. I have no reason to use Marketplace and i find it concerning that any one with a general name and phone number can make my account invalid as it use to be their cell phone number and then tarnish who ever has that number nowadays is banned for that mere minor fact.
