Earlier today when I went to do my usual doom-scrolling on Instagram, I ran into a brick wall. The app simply wouldn’t open on my Pixel 8. Assuming it might be a standalone issue, I tried opening the app on another Android smartphone to be met with the same result. The app just keeps crashing and doesn’t even make it to the homepage.

If you try to open it multiple times, you might even see a pop-up error stating “Instagram keeps stopping” with the option to check out the app info or just close it. Here’s a screenshot for reference:

After a quick search online, it was clear that I was not the only one with the issue. Since the update has only been out for a few hours, reports about the issue aren’t widespread, but I do see a couple of posts on Reddit and X. It seems that the issue popped up after the latest Instagram beta version rolled out – v369.0.0.0.67.

The issue persisted even after I cleared the cache on both devices. That said, an easy workaround would be to install an older Instagram version by sideloading an APK that you can grab from here. This is a temporary fix and I’d suggest disabling auto-updates for Instagram until the team rolls out a patched version that fixes the crashing.

In case you haven’t yet updated to Instagram Beta v369.0.0.0.67, I’d suggest holding off so that you can continue using the app. A few months ago the app crashed when visiting profile pages or inserting music in posts, so it seems the developers need to pay more attention to seemingly obvious errors that should be caught before the update heads out to the public.

Either way, I expect that an official fix will be forthcoming. So if you were looking to catch a break from Instagram, now’s the best time.
