Instagram users are seeing notifications informing that the ability to see or add Content Notes on reels and posts is being turned off. Here’s exactly what the notification says:
You won’t see or be able to add notes on posts and reels after April 03, 2025. You can still access notes in Your Activity or download them from Accounts Center until June 01, 2025.
As the message clearly states, the change comes into effect today, April 03, 2025.
Some users are surprised by this, thinking why this sudden change. However, the fact is this change was already announced around a week back by none other than Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, who took his Insta account to share the news. The reason behind pulling the plug on this feature was revealed to be low adoption by users.
Content Notes, for those who aren’t already aware, offer the ability to add notes to photos, reels or carousels. They only showed up for your friends. While notes in DMs have already been available for a while, Instagram added the ability to add notes to posts and reels last month in July.
Mosseri, while agreeing that Instagram has become complicated over the years, shared they are in the process of removing less-popular features from the app, and this change is a part of that effort. It’s important to note that notes in DMs won’t be affected by this change.
As all Instagram users are being notified of this change, it is bound to create some confusion and curiosity, especially because not everyone has been using this feature. I found some discussions online in support of this. Check them out:
