Update 12/08/24: Speaking to The Verge, Meta spokesperson said that Instagram’s new maps feature, currently in a limited test, allows users to share location-based updates with a “specific group of people,” like Close Friends or mutual followers.

Unlike Snapchat’s public Snap Maps, Instagram’s version offers more restricted privacy settings. Pai emphasized that the feature is opt-in and designed with safety in mind. However, she did not confirm whether fully public sharing would be available or how long posts would remain visible.

Instagram is no stranger to copying Snapchat features, and the Meta-owned social media platform is at it again. This time, it’s Snapchat’s Snap Map that’s in the crosshairs. Some Instagram users have spotted a new “Friend Map” feature that shows followers your live location. This comes shortly after Instagram users started noticing a new rectangular layout for ‘Posts’ tab.

According to multiple reports on X, a new ‘Maps’ feature has sneakily appeared in the messaging functions of Instagram. With this feature, you can now see where your mates are currently hanging out, pin specific locations, leave notes, snap pics from your current spot, and share them on the map. Plus, you can search for nearby friends. Think of it as a real-time GPS tracker for your friends, but with Instagram’s signature touch.

To use this feature, you need to share your precise location. We’re talking exact address, not just a general area. This has understandably sent shivers down the spines of users. After all, privacy is a big deal.

Instagram is trying to calm our fears by offering options. You can choose who sees your location — just your besties, mutual followers, or absolutely nobody. There’s even a “ghost mode” to vanish from the map completely. But let’s be real, tweaking all those settings can be a hassle. To turn off Instagram live location, head to the chat page > tap on the “Map” button in the Notes section > sharing button at the top > enable “Invisible mode”.

While some people are excited about the potential for spontaneous meet-ups and keeping tabs on friends, others are raising red flags. Sharing your location with everyone and their grandma might not be the smartest move. The good thing is that users should be able to turn this feature on and off at will.

It’s important to remember that this feature is still in its early stages. So far, it appears to be available for select iPhone users in Malaysia and Indonesia, at least going by social media reports. But so far, Instagram hasn’t officially announced it despite confirming its development earlier this year, so expect some bugs, glitches, and resistance along the way. For now, tread carefully and think twice before sharing your live location. Your digital safety is in your hands.
